Students of the month have been selected by North-ern Chautauqua Kiwanis. The students receiving this honor are Shanna Thompson and Raymond Tarnowski.
Thompson is the daughter of Barbra and Thomas Thompson. She is a senior at Fredonia High School. She has been awarded the principal's award almost every quarter. In addition to doing her best with her own studies, she tries to help her fellow students when they do not understand things.
She is actively involved in two churches, St. John's UCC and First United Presbyterian in Dunkirk. She has gone on a mission trip to South Dakota with St. John's, where she went to the Lakota reservation and helped rebuild the community's church. In return, she and her fellow church members were shown some of the Lakota's culture and traditions.
Over the summer Thompson was hired at McDonald's. She got the job to help pay for her trip to England and France this spring. She worked hard throughout the summer and senior year so she could pay for it. She wants to go to England and France because she is interested in learning about different cultures.
Thompson is in the top 20 percent of her class and has earned the USA (Unified Student Assistance) scholarship for JCC. This fall she will be attending Jamestown Community College as a media arts major.
Tarnowski is the son of James and Grace Tarnowski. He is a junior at Dunkirk High School. Tarnowski prides himself on always trying to become a better student and athlete, and also trying to become a more mature and better person overall. In the past three years, he has become more involved in his community by doing various service projects through the Blessed Mary Angela Parish youth group. He was inducted into the Dunkirk chapter of the National Honor Society and continues to involve himself in community activities.
He has been a member of the Spanish Club for the past two years and involves himself in athletics. He participates in cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. This is Tarnowski's fourth year running for Dunkirk High School, having begun in eighth grade at the modified level. He has been running for the varsity team since ninth grade. Over the seasons, he has become an accomplished runner, winning many ribbons and the sports booster award for outdoor track and field during his sophomore year. For his junior year, Tarnowski was part of the new 4x800 meter relay record team for indoor track and field.
Although Tarnowski puts a great amount of his time and energy into community service and sports, he also manages to excel in academics. He is currently ranked first in his class with an unweighted average of 98.05. He is currently taking numerous courses through the JCC College Connections program, and is planning on taking more in his senior year. He is on the JCC part-time Dean's List for the fall 2012 semester, and was named student of the month for the entire school for the month of September 2012.
Outside of school, Tarnowski enjoys running, fishing and other outdoor activities. He also spends time with his family. Upon graduation, he plans on pursuing a career teaching either science or mathematics.
