The Rotary Club has selected Students of the Month for February. The students receiving these honors are John Reed Porterfield IV and Jasmeet Sandhu.
Porterfield is a senior at Fredonia High School. He is the son of Michele Czysz Porterfield.
This June, Porterfield will graduate with an Advanced Regent's Diploma with honors, and in the top percentage of his class. Two years ago, he found academics so important that he began a process to establish a National Honor Society at Fredonia, and is proud to say he is a member of the first graduating class at Fredonia in the National Honor Society.
John Porterfield IV
In addition to being a serious student, Porterfield also remains physically active. He joined the Fredonia varsity swim team in seventh grade, and that year qualified for sectionals. Since then he has had an outstanding career on the Fredonia swim team, receiving MVP three times, and has been team captain all four years of high school. He is the only student currently attending Fredonia who has a swimming school record. He broke a 32-year-old 100 breaststroke record, and continues to improve upon that record. His two individual events are the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.
Porterfield has been a member of the high school orchestra for all four years of high school and plays the violin. He is involved in many clubs and extracurricular activities. He is currently the student body vice president of student council and has been an active member all throughout high school. This year he is also an editor for the yearbook. He has been fortunate enough to be involved in QUEST, Fredonia's backpacking program, since freshman year when he was first chosen as a junior leader.
In addition to the varsity team at Fredonia, Porterfield has swum outside of school in USA swimming for ten years. He is lifeguard certified and for the past three years has been a lifeguard at Fredonia High School as well as working as a lifeguard in Lily Dale over the summer.
Porterfield is a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church in Fredonia. At the church, he is a member of CYO, the catholic youth organization. He helps with the church's summer Bible camp every year, and has assumed many roles including photographer, councilor and group leader. He often volunteers for programs and retreats, and is trained as a Eucharistic minister. Two years ago he received a leadership award from the diocese of Buffalo.
After high school, Porterfield plans on attending college and pursuing a career in the field of environmental engineering.
Sandhu, a resident of Fredonia, was originally born in Toronto, Canada.
His main interests include literature, science and music. As far as academics are concerned, Sandhu prides himself on his strong skills in science and social studies. He has achieved mastery in all of his science and social studies regents examinations, as well as AP recognition in psychology and United States history.
His main interest in school is chemistry. He is interested in chemistry because it is the study of how chemicals interact with each other and their environment.
Apart from his academic interests, his passion is music. He finds it to be the most wonderful tool of expression he has at his disposal. His favorite instrument is the guitar. Having taken lessons for two years, he has a solid foundation in music theory and classical Baroque guitar, as well as some experience in later styles such as jazz and the blues. He is very dedicated to mastering guitar technique, and always makes sure to play at least a few times a day.
After graduation, Sandhu plans on continuing his studies in the field of chemistry, as well as also exploring music form and composition. Eventually, he hopes to work in the field of chemical research, as either a field researcher or a laboratory technician.
