Lena Mae DeLand, 101, died on Saturday (April 6, 2013) at Absolut Care in Dunkirk. She was born on July 30, 1911 in Springville, N.Y. to the late Ralph and Mary (Arnold) Straight.
Mrs. DeLand was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dunkirk, N.Y., where she had been a Sunday School teacher for many years and had been active in the United Methodist Women.
Lena loved to spend time with family and friends and had enjoyed dancing, playing cards, baking and painting. She had previously owned DeLand Rug Cleaning with her husband and then worked as a ward clerk secretary at Brooks Memorial Hospital. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, past member for 19 years of the Women of the Moose Chapter 294 and the Northern Chautauqua Conservation Auxiliary.
Surviving are six grandchildren: Raymond (Cathryn) DeLand, Rick (Lynda) DeLand, Robin (Danny Claybrooke) DeLand, Renee (Robert) Scott, all of Dunkirk, N.Y., Ronald (Donna) DeLand of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Moya (Jonathan) Page of Florida. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and her daughter-in-law Lucy (Limberg-DeLand) Buck.
Besides her parents, Lena was preceded in death by her husband Raymond DeLand (May 16, 1982), her sons Raymond DeLand Jr. (Feb. 26, 2010) and Meredith DeLand (July 6, 1987), infant grandson Meredith DeLand, Jr., her infant brother Allen Straight, and all of her sisters: Mabel Franklin, Florence Ecker, and Margaret Ludemann Skinner.
The funeral will be held at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home on Wednesday (April 10, 2013) at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday (April 9) at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Dunkirk First United Methodist Church.
