ONEONTA - Fredonia State won its second SUNYAC series of the season with a 11-6 victory wednesday over the Oneonta Red Dragons.
The Blue Devils (14-5, 5-2 SUNYAC) won two out three games, including a split of a doubleheader Tuesday, and took two of three from Plattsburgh last month in Florida. The Blue Devils also have a win over Brockport.
The loss Wednesday dropped Oneonta to 9-15 overall, 4-3 in the conference.
The Blue Devils relied on big innings for the bulk of their runs. They scored four runs after two were out in the top of the third. Brian Sheehan had an RBI single, Dillon Lowe an RBI double, and Kenny Johnston a two-run single. Oneonta countered with three runs in the last of the third, only to have the Blue Devils score five times and take a 9-3 lead in the top of the fourth. Dan Fetes had an RBI double and Sheehan and Matt Casilio RBI singles in an inning fueled by a lead-off walk and three Oneonta errors.
After Oneonta cut its deficit to 9-6, the Blue Devils added an insurance run in the seventh on a lead-off triple by John Bennett and an infield groundout by Fetes. They also added a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Connor Lorenzo.
Senior right-hander Jake Nowak started for the Blue Devils and worked the first four innings before giving way to Zachary Jordon (4-0). Jordon, a sophomore right-hander, pitched five innings of relief, allowed one run on three hits, no walks, and seven strikeouts.
Sheehan went 4-for-4 to lead Fredonia State's 12-hit attack. He also had two RBI. Bennett had two hits and scored three runs
Fredonia State returns home for three SUNYAC games this weekend vs. New Paltz, a single game Friday starting at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday.
Blue Devils dealt rain-halted
7-2 loss at Allegheny
MEADVILLE, Pa. - Fredonia State fell 7-2 to Allegheny in a game called after six innings due a severe thunderstorm.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled.
The Blue Devils (5-14) were leading 2-0 until just before the game became official. The host Gators (12-13) scored six runs in the last of the fifth, then added their final run in the sixth, before the game was called. Allegheny second baseman Sadie Stuart homered in each of the innings and also had a double.
Both Fredonia State runs came in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit. Lead-off hitter Katie Bartkowiak reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Alyssa Morgan walked and enticed the Allegheny pitcher, Caitlin Nealer, into a throwing error which allowed Bartkowiak to score.
Morgan scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Megan Medina before Nealer settled down. She finished with a two-hitter - singles by Medina and Jess Lauck - with one walk and eight strikeouts. It was her 20th pitching decision of the season, as she is now 10-10.
Alyssa Brognano (3-6) was the losing pitcher.
The Blue Devils return to SUNYAC competition when they play host to Buffalo State on Saturday. The scheduled doubleheader is set to start at noon.
NOTES: Batkowiak is nationally ranked in a somewhat dubious category - No. 3 at being hit by pitches. She had been plunked a school-record 10 times and was averaging 0.56 HBPs per game through Sunday. A senior outfielder from Fredonia, Bartkowiak has been hit by pitches 32 times in four collegiate seasons. She was hit nine times in 2010, which was the previous Blue Devil single-season record. She's also ranked No. 3 and No. 4 on the all-time single-season list.
