JAMESTOWN - A 2-year-old child was the unfortunate witness to a drug bust Friday morning in Jamestown.
Jamestown police and the department's SWAT team executed a search warrant at 43 Sampson St. after learning two city residents were involved in the illegal sale of narcotics at the apartment.
Members of the SWAT team assisted with entry and once inside, officers located 27-year-old Rocco Beardsley and 20-year-old Kylie M. Reeves along with the child. Investigators also recovered a quantity of cocaine and oxycodone pills inside the residence along with a large sum of cash and drug paraphernalia.
"The entry method can be altered or changed if we take into consideration that a child may be involved," said Captain Bob Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department. "It can also speed up a case if we know a child may be involved, but in this case she was baby-sitting."
Both Beardsley and Reeves are charged with third- and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance while Reeves was additionally charged with endangering the welfare of a child after it was determined the drug activity was occurring while she was baby-sitting the child.
The two adults were taken to Jamestown City Jail where they are awaiting arraignment while the child's mother was called at her place of employment to pick up the child at the residence.
"Our investigation revealed that the parent did not realize (drug dealing) was going on," said Samuelson.
Friday morning's bust was the second in less than 24 hours for the JPD. On Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. another Jamestown resident was taken into custody.
Zaid I. Mendoza, 34, was charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance after Jamestown Police Department investigators executed a search warrant at 905 Prendergast Ave. at 1 p.m. Thursday. Investigators and the New York State Police's Community Narcotics Enforcement Team conducted a several months-long investigation into the sale of crack cocaine at the location.
Mendona was arraigned in Jamestown City Court and remanded to Chautauqua County Jail.
