OLEAN - Despite Colleen Steward and Sarah Grubbs each winning two events Wednesday, the Gowanda Lady Panthers (0-1) fell in their CCAA Division 1 girls track and field meet, 81-52, to Olean (1-0).
"We're a small team," Gowanda head coach Pete Palmer said. "But we've got a lot of good, solid potential, so we'll just have to see how we improve as the year goes on. We are very strong on the track and a little weak in the field events."
Steward took first in both distance races, crossing the finish line in the 1,500-meter in 6:00.6 and the 3,000 in 13:15.5. Grubbs was first in the 800 (2:56.4) and the high jump (4-feet, 6-inches). Taylor Kickbush helped the Lady Panthers' with a win in the 400 (1:27) while Hunter Samuelson won the 400 hurdles in 1:27. Also for Gowanda, Emma Weyand won the shot put with her throw of 25-8-1/2. The 4x800 relay team of Steward, Samuelson, Kickbush and Grubbs earned a first-place finish with their time of 11:17.5.
In the boys' meet, Gowanda fell, 102-35, earning four first-place finishes in the track events.
"We're looking pretty solid," Gowanda head coach Josh West said. "It was a good start to the season. I don't think the score shows how close the meet was. We competed on the track, but didn't do very well in the field."
Kevin Frederickson won the 400 hurdles (1:02.19) and Lucas Brawdy took the 800 (2:13.44) while the 4x100 and 4x800 relay teams were also victorious.
