PORTLAND - Improperly extinguished or discarded smoking materials led to an accidental fire on Friday night, the Chautauqua County Fire Investigation team reported Saturday morning.
The family, who was at the structure at 5772 Ellicott Road, Lot 69, is being assisted by the American Red Cross. Investigators determined the blaze started on the front steps in an enclosed entry.

HARMONY - Kevin C. Cole, 49, of Sherman was charged with parking on pavement, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and aggravated driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content .18 or higher on Friday. At 11:25 p.m. Deputies found Cole in his vehicle parked with the engine running in the driving lane on Baker Street at Route 474. Investigation found Cole to be intoxicated and he had been operating a vehicle with a revoked license. He was issued appearance tickets and released to a responsible third party.
POMFRET - Daniel L. Kessler, 26, of Fredonia was charged with two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree harassment on Saturday. At 9 a.m. deputies responded to a disturbance at a Route 60 residence. Following an investigation, it is alleged Kessler struck an individual and damaged property at the residence. He was arraigned in the Town of Pomfret Court and held on $1,000 cash or $2,000 property bail.
HARMONY - Clayton D. Phillips, 25, of Lakewood was charged with speeding and driving while intoxicated on Saturday. At 1:42 a.m. deputies stopped Phillips for speeding on Hoag Road. He was found to be intoxicated, and had a prior conviction for DWI in the last 10 years making this charge a felony. He was released on appearance tickets and then released to a responsible third party.
