Betty Ann Gaus, 91, of Arkwright died Saturday evening (May 4, 2013) at the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk.
She was born Jan. 7, 1922 in Dunkirk, the daughter of the late Frank and Mabel (Sickelco) Helwig.
A 1931 graduate of Dunkirk High School, Mrs. Gaus was secretary at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. in Dunkirk, retiring in 1974.
On May 12, 1943, she married her loving husband of over 65 years, Albert H. Gaus, who died Jan. 18, 2009. She and her husband relocated to the Town of Arkwright in 1946 where they maintained a small horse farm and raised heifers. She loved to travel and the couple spent time in Switzerland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
A member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fredonia, Mrs. Gaus loved horses and enjoyed riding them. She was a great cook and also loved dogs.
Nieces and nephews survive.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Jane Helwig; and one brother, Richard "Dick" Helwig.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10 o'clock in the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. Pastor William Novack will officiate. Burial will be in Basswood Hill Cemetery in the Town of Allen. Calling hours will be held Friday morning from 9-10, one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lakeshore Humane Society Adoption Center, 431 East Chestnut St., Dunkirk, NY 14048.
