The New York Press Association's 2012 Better Newspaper Competition awarded two first place journalism awards to Fredonia High School students. Members of NYPA compete against other professionals working for newspapers across the state. Approximately 4,000 entries are received each year. The competition includes a section for college and one for high school journalists across the state.
Jake Lilly won first place in the category of Best Sports Story for his article "Better safe than sorry." Judges, members of the North Carolina Press Association, commented "[This is] a well-written story about an important topic. The writer uses enterprise and his own experiences. [This article] had a strong presentation."
Nicholas Michalski won first place in the category of Feature Story for his article "but they can't take our dignity!" Judges commented "This is a balanced look at a timely topic, important to the publication's readership. Engaging interviews illustrate the issue. Nice layout keeps the reader going."
