OBSERVER Staff Report
Local high school baseball and softball teams recorded a clean sweep of their Section 5 foes Tuesday in the Far West Regionals.
The Fredonia Hillbillies avenged last year's loss to Wayland-Cohocton with a 2-0 victory in the Class B baseball Far West Regional at Diethrick Park in Jamestown. The Hillbillies will now travel to Binghamton Saturday to play in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Baseball Tournament for the first time since 2009.
Joining them in Binghamton will be the Pine Valley Panthers, who defeated Lyndonville, 3-2, in the Class D Far West Regional at Batavia's Dwyer Stadium to return to States for the second straight season.
Despite just four league wins in the regular season and a rookie coach in Danielle Arnone, the Pine Valley Lady Panthers are headed to the NYSPHSAA Softball Tournament in Glens Falls Saturday after a 2-1 defeat of Andover in a Class D Far West Regional at Olean High School.
