Twenty years ago - 1993
One hundred thousand tiny Chinook salmon were released into Lake Erie off Dunkirk earlier this week as part of a four-year experiment being conducted by the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation, the Northern Chautauqua County Conservation Club and the Lake Erie Salmon and Trout Association. The purpose of the program is to determine whether young fish develop a biological memory (or imprint) that draws them back to a particular location. Scientists also want to determine whether the survival rate is higher for fish that have been imprinted.
Thirty years ago - 1983
The village of North Collins may be a pioneer in a new area labor field - utilizing volunteer inmates from the Collins Correctional Facility for three upcoming projects. The first project under consideration is providing the labor to build the Dr. Russell Joy Village Park on Main Street. Other projects are cleaning a small stream that runs through the village and cutting brush and picking up debris along the railroad tracks.
Forty years ago - 1973
Present and former club members and six charter members of the Dunkirk High School "D" Club, who held their first meeting at Coach Karl Hoeppner's home in May 1923, were present at the 50th anniversary banquet this past weekend.
Fifty years ago - 1963
"Jeff" was back at the Marine Wonderland pool at Niagara Falls, Ontario today after becoming possibly the first sea lion to tumble over the Horseshoe Falls. He was captured yesterday after a boating party spotted him sunning on a rock.
