Co-creator and star of NBC's "Mad About You," Paul Reiser, is once again touring as a stand-up comedian.
As part of his Up Close and Personal stand-up comedy tour, Reiser will appear at the Seneca Allegany Casino tonight at 7 p.m.
According to Reiser, he has never performed in this area before, but he went to school in Binghamton and is familiar with Western New York.
"People in Buffalo have summer homes in Binghamton - it's the tropical version," said Reiser. "I'm from New York so it feels vaguely like a homecoming to Upstate New York. I don't know why but the east coast feels more correct to me. When I walk around, or even if I'm in the woods in New York, it feels different than California or Oregon woods. It's like, 'Yeah, this feels right - the trees look more correct.' So, I definitely feel at home ... and I'm definitely looking forward to it."
A seasoned entertainer, Reiser has had much success throughout his career. He has earned Emmy, Golden Globe, American Comedy Award and Screen Actors Guild nominations; sold 2 million copies of and reached the No. 1 spot on the New York Times bestseller list with his first book, "Couplehood"; had his song "Final Frontier" broadcast on Mars; and played piano and wrote original songs for an album entitled "Unusual Suspects," which featured Julia Fordham. However, Reiser hasn't done a stand-up comedy tour in 20 years since "Mad About You" started, he said.
"Every week I'm somewhere else, and I've been to new places that I've never been in all corners of the country," said Reiser. "It's really been kind of heartwarming to see how similar, in the best sense, people and places are. I'm not doing Buffalo or Salt Lake City material, but the stuff I talk about people know from my books or from 'Mad About You.' Hopefully it's stuff that everybody relates to, and when they hear it they laugh because they go, 'Oh man, he's talking about us.'
"So, not only has it been heartwarming to see people responding all over the country the same way, but I haven't been out touring in public this way, so I do little meet and greets after the show where I get to say hello to people," continued Reiser. "There's always somebody who has a story ... stuff that I would never know because people might not take the time to write me, but when you go to their towns it's like getting together with old friends - it's great feeling this time around."
At the Seneca Allegany Casino performance, Reiser will attempt to entertain the audience by focusing on the personal inner workings of his own life.
"I'm not smart enough to make anything up - so I just talk about what really happens," said Reiser. "But when I talk about my wife, my kids, me getting older and me struggling with an ever-changing world - people go, 'Yes, that's me, that's my wife, that's my kid and that's my dilemma.' Invariably, what I've learned is that the stuff that is the most personal is the stuff that ends up being the most universal."
