James L. "Jug" Jagoda, age 78, of Dunkirk died Sunday afternoon (June 23, 2013) at the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk after a lengthy illness.
He was born Nov. 15, 1934 in Dunkirk, the son of the late Frank and Catherine (Keilen) Jagoda.
A lifelong Dunkirk resident, Mr. Jagoda had been employed as a mechanic for the Street Department in the city of Dunkirk. In the past, he and his partner Larry Haase ran the Covered Wagon in Dunkirk for 33 years. He also was the proprietor of the former Jug's Mobil Service Station at the corner of Fourth and Main streets in Dunkirk.

A 50-year member of the Dunkirk Elks Lodge 922, he served as Exalted Ruler from 1995-1996. He was a NYS Elks Association state vice president from 1998-1999; District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler in 2001; Lodge secretary (1990-2010); and an active committee member and bingo treasurer for many years.
Mr. Jagoda also was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Dun-kirk Moose Lodge 89 and a life member of both the Moniuszko and the First Ward Falcon clubs.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalie J. "Jean" (Majka) Jagoda, whom he married Sept. 22, 1956; two sons, Michael A. (Crystal) Jagoda of Sherman and Lorry A. Jagoda of Dunkirk; three brothers, David (Janet) Jagoda of Dunkirk, Raymond (Dolores) Jagoda of Portland and Frederick "Fritz" Jagoda of Erie, Pa.; three grandsons; one great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, James L. Jagoda Jr.; one sister, Jean Harper; and three brothers, Robert, Frank and John Jagoda.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Burial will be in Willowbrook Park Cemetery. Calling hours will be held today from 4-7 p.m. at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
