I was very surprised to find in the CGR report book no mention of the Chautauqua County Home cost-cutting program that was started five years ago in 2008.
I was interviewed by a representative of CGR (Center for Governmental Research) and felt that our endeavor to become solvent by cutting costs should receive public notice. However, that was not the case.
Our cost-cutting involved food, water, natural gas and electricity. These cost-cutting methods of mine, the administrator and the resident council deal with the use of the computer to store dislikes of residents and ensures that they not be served these dishes again in the waste of food.
Our cutting of electricity entails shutting off lights in dining rooms and other places when those rooms are not in use.
Our saving on water is done by filling the pitchers half full, where residents do not use a full pitcher. Also, shower water is made warmer sooner to avoid waste. This is done by conveying water from bottom floors to higher floors.
Gas and air conditioning also are on a computer, resulting in savings.
This cost cutting procedure may help many nursing homes to cut costs as thousands of dollars are saved at our Home.
Tim Hellwig, administrator at our Chautauqua County Home has added cost cutting suggestions of CGR to our list of cost cutting procedures. These include elimination of unnecessary jobs, an electronic medical record keeping system and an increase in Medicaid and private pay residents.
These and our other savings amount to many thousands of dollars and move the County Home closer to solvency.
