Genevieve M. "Jean" Katta, age 87, of North Martin Street, Dunkirk, NY passed away Monday (July 22, 2013) following a lengthy battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
She was born on Jan. 3, 1926, the daughter of the late Stanley and Bernice Dypka.
A lifelong Dunkirk resident, Genevieve attended St. Hyacinth's School. She was a retired employee of the Kmart Corporation and formerly was employed at the Kresges and Jupiter store on Central Avenue for 30 years, Van Raalte and as a greeter at Wal-Mart.
She was a member of Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish - St. Hyacinth's Church and the parish's Holy Rosary Society.
Surviving are her four children, Thomas (Mary Ann) Katta, Robert (Linda) Katta and Barbara Katta, all of Dunkirk, and Raymond (Linda) Katta of Fredonia; seven grandchildren, Wendi Katta, Lori (Dan Snader) Katta, Holly (Mark Lucas) Katta, Jeanette (Bobby) Ko-zlowski, Michelle (Billy) Kuras, Nick Saden and Amanda Saden; five great grandchildren, Robert, John and Gracey Ko-zlowski, Zachary and Chloe Jean Snader, and Hannah Kuras. Nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, August "Gus" Katta, who died Feb. 11, 1979; two brothers, Frank Dypka and Edward Dypka; and three sisters, Josephine Kosmowski, Sophie Adamski and Frances Kozlowski.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:15 from the Newman Funeral Home Inc. and at 10 o'clock in Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish - St. Hyacinth's Church. Inter-ment will follow in St. Hyacinth's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday. The Holy Rosary Society will recite the rosary at 6:30 Wednesday evening. Flowers gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Hyacinth's Church or to the ALS Association Upstate New York Chapter, 890 Seventh North Street, Suite 108, Liverpool, NY 13088.
