BARCELONA - Two people were rushed to the hospital Friday afternoon after both of their vehicles collided on Route 5 in Barcelona in the town of Westfield.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office responded to the crash on Route 5 at 1:30 p.m. Upon investigation, it was found a vehicle operated by Charles Fredricks, 84, of Conneaut Lake, Pa., was eastbound at a high rate of speed and attempted to pass several vehicles on the right-hand side.
Fredricks' vehicle struck one of the vehicles that was operated by Richard Schaack, 71, of Dunedin, Fla. Schaack's vehicle was struck in the rear.

Charles Fredricks of Pennsylvania was extricated from his vehicle after it crashed near a bed-and-breakfast.
After striking Schaack, Fredricks continued on through a fence in a yard and then into a hedgerow.
Fredricks was extricated from the vehicle by Westfield Rescue and flown to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa., for treatment of his injuries. Schaack was transported to Westfield Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The Westfield Police Department and Starflight also assisted at the scene. The investigation is still continuing.
