John S. Vecchio, 86, of Tonawanda, died Monday (July 29, 2013) at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital.
He was born in Buffalo, NY on July 5, 1927 and had served with the U.S. Army.
Mr. Vecchio received a bachelor of arts degree in Industrial Arts and a master's in Special Education K-12 from State Teachers College in Buffalo (Buffalo State).
He taught at East High School from 1962-63 and then taught Special Education for WS State School Erie II BOCES from 1963-66. From 1966-1988, he taught at the Erie II BOCES LoGuidice Center in Fredonia. During his tenure, he created work study programs for special needs children and was instrumental in getting legislation passed to hire special needs people.
A "Mr. Fix-It," he enjoyed art, music and being with his family.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Rose (Sfratta) Vecchio; five children, John (Janice), Mary Louise, Isabelle, Roseann and Ann Vecchio; a sister, Carmella (Henry) Volpe; and two grandchildren, Daniel and John Vecchio.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Isabella (Radoani) Vecchio.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 9:15 a.m. at St. Paul's R.C. Church (Delaware Ave. and Victoria Blvd.), Kenmore followed by interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. (Everyone please assemble at church).
