Twenty years ago - 1993
Six young adults from St. Joseph's CYO in Fredonia are en route to Denver, Colo., to see Pope John Paul II. They are Patrick Callan, Richard Krupinski, Michael Zuchowski, Kara Davis, Heather Brown and Suzanne Scholand. The Rev. James O'Connor, pastor of St. Joseph's Church, is accompanying them on their Aug. 11-15 pilgrimage for World Youth Day. The Papal welcome will be held at Mile High Stadium. Channel 2 reporter Laurie Lisowski will accompany the Western New York delegation with live reports three times a day.
Thirty years ago - 1983
The Murraymen Drum and Bugle Corps of Hose Co. No. 4 in Dunkirk received the top trophy in the Senior Drum Corps category at the Western New York Volunteer Firemen's Association convention parade for the third year in a row. They also recently won first place honors at the Chautauqua County Fair. To date, the Murraymen have captured eight first and two second places. Their Color Guard has won five first-place honors.
Forty years ago - 1973
A dead 35-inch shark was found a couple days ago, floating in Dunkirk Harbor. As it is a native of the Atlantic Ocean, officials think it may be an elaborate hoax, but no conclusion has yet been determined regarding its presence.
Fifty years ago - 1963
"Junior Shanks & the Surfers" will entertain at the Oakdale Pavilion on Oak Street at Point Gratiot, Dunkirk. The group specializes in "twist" music.
