A senior at Dunkirk High School was named as a Samsung American Legion Scholarship national finalist. Mark Bernard Karalus Jr. was selected by the staff of American Department of New York Boys' State Program which was held at Morrisville College in Morrisville from June 23-28.
In making the announcement the selection officials said Karalus was named a national finalist on the basis of academics, school and community involvement and financial need. Karalus will join 97 other national finalists from around the United States, each competing for one of nine scholarships worth an estimated $20,000 apiece.
The Samsung American Legion Scholarship funds come from the earnings of a $5 million endowment given by Samsung. Samsung, as a way "to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea's aid during its struggle against communist forces in the Korean War" joined with the American Legion to offer an educational opportunity to the descendants of war-time veterans who served honorably. Karalus's grandfather served in the United States Army during the time of the Korean War.
