It is a special weekend in South Dayton.
Thirty years ago, the big time came to the village when scenes for the movie "The Natural" starring Robert Redford took place. Numerous area residents, from not only South Dayton but other localities including Cassadaga, Dunkirk, Fredonia, Cherry Creek, Silver Creek and Sinclairville were part of the movie.
From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, the memories of being part of the big screen will be remembered as part of a celebration event in the village. A ceremony featuring guest speakers will start the weekend.
"We're looking for the extras," said Vivian Gould of South Dayton last month. "We're looking just to have a good time reminiscing. If they have pictures, they're more than welcome to bring them."
In addition to the movie being shown throughout the weekend in the fire hall, there will be a model train display, antique cars, a pie-baking contest, bands as well as a baseball game.
The movie, which was released in 1984, became an instant classic. The upcoming weekend events, we expect, also will be a hit.
