Cardinal Mindszenty High School alumni, spanning many class years, gathered together at a reception held at Sacred Heart Parish in Lakewood to celebrate the retirement of their former teacher, who was known as Father Dowdell when he taught them. Now Monsignor Joseph M. Dowdell, he was a much-loved faculty member who taught religion, Spanish and math. Monsignor Dowdell greeted the group with his favorite saying, "My friends, my friends." In his old familiar way, he reminisced with alumni about themselves and their families. Pictures were taken, old memories recalled, famous (or was it infamous?) stories retold, and friends and faculty remembered. The whole group sang the Mindszenty "Fight Song" together. Monsignor Dowdell will retire in the Lockport area near his family.
Cardinal Mindszenty High School may no longer be "in session," but the memories of those special times and friends of a lifetime will last forever.
"Purple and Gold,/Never apart,/Lives forever in our hearts./Fight on Mindszenty./ The spirit still lives."
