The Lake Shore Lady Eagles (2-0, 1-0) defeated the Dunkirk Lady Marauders (1-1, 0-0) in the finals of the Dunkirk Kickoff Soccer Tournament by a score of 12-1 Friday in Dunkirk. Melanie Linsmair paced Lake Shore's offense with two goals and four assists.
In net for the Lady Eagles, Ashley Fix stopped 12 of 13 shots to pick up the win. Kelsey Slate scored Dunkirk's lone goal. The shots were nearly equal for both sides but it was Lake Shore that made the most of their opportunities to win the tournament championship.
Dunkirk will travel to Fredonia Tuesday to face off in an open league contest against the Lady Hillbillies.
In the consolation game, Springville defeated Olmsted 12-0. Injuries plagued Olmsted early and the two teams played 9-on-9 for the majority of the contest. Alena and Tiana Woodarek led Springville's offense with four goals apiece.
Pine Valley 3, Panama 1
South Dayton - In a closely-contested CCAA non-league girls volleyball matchup, Pine Valley (1-1, 0-0) defeated Panama (1-1, 0-0) by a score of 3-1 Friday at Pine Valley.
Panama came out strong and took the first game 29-27 but from there it was all Pine Valley who took the next three games 25-22, 25-16, 25-23.
"It was a battle," Pine Valley coach Justina Troutman said. "I've been waiting for them to show up and tonight they did. I'm very happy."
Kayla Mansfield recorded eight kills and three blocks for Pine Valley while Ahleen Pollock contributed 19 assists. Aleah Fancher had six kills in the win.
"We've been hit-or-miss (so far this season)," Troutman said. "It just always seemed like we were missing a piece of the puzzle. It was all there tonight."
Panama was led by Carly Abbate who had eight kills, nine assists, six points and three aces. Taylor Bowen also filled the stat sheet in the losing effort with 11 assists, five kills, eight points and three aces. Ally Strickland chipped in 13 digs, eight points and two aces for Panama.
