BROCTON - Around 1,500 people attended a candlelight vigil at the Brocton Central School Football Stadium Wednesday evening to show their community support in the wake of Brocton football player Damon Janes' tragic death on Monday.
Classmates and teachers started the ceremony off by lighting votive candles on the football field in the shape of the number 25, Damon's football number. Sky lanterns were then released into the air by classmates and teammates of Damon. The Janes family then released white helium balloons into the air before a prayer was read by an announcer. Onlookers surrounded the perimeter of the football field with candles in memory of the 16-year-old Brocton junior.
