Staring down a two sets to one deficit, the Fredonia Lady Hillbillies (3-4, 6-6) managed to regroup and win the final two sets to win a hard-fought victory 25-23, 12-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-22 over the Panama Lady Panthers (5-1, 6-5) in a non-league girls volleyball contest Monday.
"Monday games are always tough," Fredonia coach Chris Anderson said. "It was some flat volleyball to start but once we got going we were able to keep the momentum. We have become the queens of five sets. It was a nice win for the kids. They were able to fight through and are working toward a common goal."
Makenzie Tarnowski led the Lady Hillbillies with 11 kills and two blocks. Maddy Crandall had 19 assists while teammate Emily Ludwig added eight kills. Hailee Martinez contributed 12 digs and four aces in the victory.
Panama, who has struggled in non-league contests this season, got a stand-out performance from Carly Abbatte who recorded 15 assists, seven kills and five aces. Ally Strickland had seven kills, three aces and seven digs. Taylor Bowen recorded 16 assists and six kills for the Lady Panthers in the loss.
BEMUS POINT - Brocton/Westfield picked up its second victory of the season, posting a 17-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-15 win over Maple Grove (0-7, 0-8) in non-league action.
For the winners, Andrea Markham drilled six aces, four kills, two blocks and 20 service points and Marissa Okerllund had four aces, four kills, three blocks and four digs.
Jasmine Hannold came through with four aces, 10 assists and two digs, Paige Hammond added six aces, four kills and 11 digs and Nicole Hemminger had six aces, four kills and eight digs for the Lady Red Dragons.
In jayvee action, Maple Grove was a 25-18, 27-25 and 25-11 winner over Brocton/Westfield.
WEST VALLEY - After dropping the first set, the Forestville Lady Hornets (5-3, 6-4) came storming back to win the next three on their way to a 20-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-19 victory over the West Valley Lady Panthers in a non-league contest Monday.
Sierra Tweedie led the Lady Hornets with 14 kills and eight digs. Alisha Szumigala had 11 kills, four blocks and five digs while Lizzy Gilman added 11 kills and four blocks. Forestville's two setters turned in stellar performances as Amanda Weaver recorded 19 assists and a kill while fellow setter Ashley Van Buskirk had 15 assists and two kills. Baylee Gloss added 14 digs and two aces in the win.
"We started slow in the first set," Forestville coach Jack Dugan said. "West Valley played strong defense and we had to match their intensity. This was a big improvement over our last match. We did a good job taking care of the ball and keeping our focus."
SOUTH DAYTON - Kayla Mansfield's four kills were not enough as Ellicottville (10-1, 8-0) swept Pine Valley (5-6, 3-5), 25-19, 25-19, 25-23, Monday in CCAA East II girls high school volleyball.
Kayce Abers charted three kills and Aaren Waterman finished with four blocks in a losing effort. Jessica Pillard had four aces and 10 service points for the Lady Panthers.
The Lady Eagles were led by Kourtney Scanlon's 16 kills, seven digs and seven blocks. Marissa Hamilton charted seven kills and 19 assists. Kayla Bunkelman had four aces and 18 service points in the victory.
NORTH COLLINS - The Filkov sisters paced the North Collins Lady Eagles (6-1, 6-3) past the Gowanda Lady Panthers (0-7, 1-8), 25-17, 25-11, 25-10, Monday in CCAA East II girls high school volleyball.
Angela Filkov charted 26 assists, five digs and five aces while Jasmine Filkov added 12 kills and eight digs. Arrika Bley finished with six kills for the winners.
