Just because the federal government is in shutdown mode, it does not mean it has to even take down the Web sites.
A trip to www.census.gov by this newspaper this week led to this notice: "Due to the lapse in government funding, census.gov sites, services, and all online survey collection requests will be unavailable until further notice."
Certainly Web sites are updated on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, but shutting down the U.S. Census site just seems to be spiteful. Population figures and estimates are done yearly, they do not change every day.
Government could run the site with a notice that says the site has not been updated since Oct. 1 at a very minimal cost. It's the employees who maintain the site that costs the big bucks, not the Web site itself.
