Just as it began to look like the game was headed for overtime, with both teams deadlocked in a 0-0 tie, Gianni DeJesus found the back of the net to give the Dunkirk Marauders (2-9-0, 2-11-1) a 1-0 win over the Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds (1-7-2, 2-9-2) Friday in CCAA West boys soccer action.
With time running out, Chautauqua Lake cleared the ball from its end but Angel Ezhevarria managed to gain possession and move the ball up field. Ezhevarria found Antonio Robles who let loose with a blast that wound up on the foot of DeJesus. DeJesus then settled the ball and took his shot from 20 yards out. The shot found the upper corner for the goal just as time expired to give Dunkirk the exciting last-second victory.
"We played great," Dunkirk coach Mike Green said. "We have struggled all season to find our offense. We have moved most of our scorers to defense due to injuries. We are finally starting to get shots on goal. This win gives us a ton of confidence. Chautauqua Lake is a very good team. We know we can play with anyone."
Nick Thompson made his first varsity start in goal for Dunkirk and came away with the shutout after making seven saves.
James Latimer took the loss in goal for the Thunderbirds while making six saves.
Fredonia 1, Falconer 1
The Fredonia Hillbillies and Falconer Golden Falcons battled to a 1-1 tie Friday in CCAA West boys high school soccer.
The Hillbillies opened the scoring at the 30:29 mark as Matt Sheridan scored on a penalty kick for the 1-0 halftime edge.
In the second half, Falconer's Andrew Beckerink slipped a free kick past Fredonia goaltender Morghan Thompson for the equalizer.
However, both teams were unable to score the rest of the way.
The Hillbillies had multiple scoring chances throughout the game, but could not find the back of the net.
"(Falconer goalie Trevor Dykstra) made a couple nice saves. I don't care who you're cheering for, you applaud some of the saves he made. He did a great job."
Dykstra made 10 saves, while Thompson made five for the winners.
Fredonia returns to action Tuesday at Pine Valley.
