Board members met recently to discuss plans for future events. President Sam Crisanti, welcomed Laurie Detenbeck to the meeting. Laurie is the wife of the new Dean of Visual and Performing Arts at SUNY Fredonia and holds a degree in Italian Studies.
A Columbus Day Harvest Festival is today at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph Church in Fredonia. Members and guests are asked to bring a dish to pass and their place setting and any beverage other than coffee. Come make new friends, see old friends, and learn about future events of CIAO. Members don't have to be Italian to join. New members are welcome.
On Nov. 1, at 5 p.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Chaira will be hosting a Tuscan Cooking Class. Cost of the event is $8 for members and $10 for non members. Space is limited to the first 25 people. Menu consists of Tuscan Brochette, (including sausage and polenta), Pasta with Leeks, Gorgonzola, and for dessertProfiterole a cake prepared with bigne and chocolate. Laurie Detenbeck announced Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. at Room 105 in Fenton Hall, SUNY Fredonia, an Italian film entitled The Peasant and the Priest will be shown. The film is a documentary by filmmaker Esther Podemski about two Italian men in their eighties who have survived from medieval Italy to present day. Sergio, a sharecropper uses ancient methods of farming which have been overshadowed by large agriculture corporations. Father Oreste fights the social aspects of human trafficking of women from Africa and Europe. The public can attend this free event.
The film maker will be present for the viewing.
During the month of November the opera Cenerentola (Cinderella) will be performed. Tickets are required for this event. More information will follow.
To meet the requests of CIAO members, Italian language lessons will be available after the beginning of the new year. Laurie will provide us with more detailed information as to cost, location and number of classes and limit of participants.
The Board is still panning for trips. Locations such as Boston and Toronto are being considered.The next board meeting will be held on Nov. 5, at 7 p.m., JCC Conference Center. All are welcome.
