Charles E. "Charlie" Burtner, 71, of Fredonia passed away Thursday (Nov. 9, 2013) at home.
He was born Jan. 24, 1942 in Panama, NY, the son of Fred and Beatrice Barrett Burtner.
A 1960 graduate of Pine Valley Central School and veteran of the United States Air Force, Charlie was a re-tired welder who had been employed at the former Slawson & Mead Fabrication of Dunkirk.
He was a member of Dunkirk Moose Lodge 89, the American Legion, Arbor Day Foundation and the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens.
Charlie enjoyed gardening, playing Scrabble, computer games and reading. An avid lover of nature and unable to walk through the woods in recent years, he was fond of just sitting down at Point Gratiot in Dunkirk watching the squirrels and birds and observing the waves of Lake Erie.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of 45 years, Barbara (Barabasz) Burtner; two sons, James (Yvonne) Burtner of Brocton and Steve Burtner of Fredonia, NY; a sister, Babette Friedman of Portland, Oregon; and granddaughters Amanda (Burtner) Spiller of Fredonia and Cierra Burtner of Brocton; along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father and half brother, David Paul Geer.
His body has been donated to the State School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences University at Buffalo Anatomical Gift Program. A private family service will be held at a later date.
