Joseph H. Short, 95, of Hultquist Place, Jamestown, formerly of 20 Lakeview Dr., Lakewood, died Saturday (November 16, 2013) at Lutheran.
Born January 27, 1918 in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of the late Stanley and Madeline (Martin) Short.
Following graduation from Pittsford, N.Y., High School and graduation cum laude from Niagara University, he was employed by J. and L. Steel Company in Pittsburgh, and then as an instructor for Curtiss-Wright at the Air Force Technical Training Command School in Buffalo.
He married Lucille Purdy on September 2, 1944 in Coraopolis, Pa. Moving to Fredonia, N.Y., in 1949, he was employed by the Van Raalte Company in Dunkirk in area management positions. In 1965, while living in Lewiston, N.Y., he was the owner of the Snelling Personnel Agency in Niagara Falls, N.Y. Upon retirement in 1985, he and his wife moved to Lakewood, N.Y.
He was an active elder in the Fredonia and Lewiston Presbyterian Churches and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jamestown.
His interests included woodworking, reading, and yearly vacations in the Adirondacks with his son. In earlier years, he was treasurer of the Dunkirk Yacht Club, where he enjoyed sailing.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, and a son, William S. Short of Lakewood.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family, with burial in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
