A Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office dispatcher has been awarded for his outstanding efforts to aid a citizen in need using Smart911, the county's latest 911 service aimed to improve emergency response.
Sheriff Joseph A. Gerace presented Michael Katta with the Smart911 SmartSave Award, which aims to recognize and reward all call takers, dispatchers and emergency responders who are able to effectively use information in a Smart911 profile to positively affect the outcome of an emergency.
On March 27, Katta, a dispatcher of 20 years, received a 911 call for a citizen in need of medical response. A woman stated her father was having chest pains in a public parking lot and they needed assistance. Katta began processing the call to send appropriate response to the man, asking his daughter for details on their location, which she provided and quickly added, "Do you have my Smart911 profile? All of his medical information is there."

Already assessing information in the safety profile that had appeared on his screen, Katta responded, "Yes, I do. I'm sending help right now." That was all it took to calm the caller and ensure that proper EMS response was sent to the man with a full understanding of his medical history. In addition, Katta forwarded the patient's medical information to the hospital where he was transported to assist in their diagnosis and treatment.
"The caller knew her father had a detailed medical history, but in those panicked moments, it's difficult to remember all details and relay them quickly," Katta said. "Their safety profile listed all his medical notes and I was able to dispatch EMS response with that information, which would help them diagnose and treat him very quickly."
Smart911 allows citizens to create a safety profile for their household that includes any information they want 911 and response teams to have in the event of an emergency. When a citizen makes an emergency call, their safety profile is automatically displayed to the 911 call taker, allowing them to send the right response teams to the right location with the right information. Responders can be aware of many details that they would not have known previously, and now fire crews can arrive at a house fire knowing how many people live in the home and location of bedrooms. EMS can be advised of allergies or specific medical conditions and police can have the photo of a missing child in seconds rather than hours.
"We implemented Smart911 in Chautauqua County just over a year ago for this very reason, to save time and to save lives," said Gerace. "Michael used this information exactly as it was intended, to aid in providing the fastest and most accurate response possible. I am so glad this citizen recognized the benefit of Smart911 and took the time to create their safety profile; it may have saved his life."
Introduced nearly three years ago by Rave Mobile Safety, the most trusted software partner for campus and public safety, Smart911 has been adopted in 32 states and more than 400 municipalities. It has been credited with positively impacting emergency situations across the United States. Residents are encouraged to create their safety profile with Smart911 today to have their information immediately available to 911. Smart911data is private and secure, is only used for emergency responses and is available to the 911 system in the event of an emergency call.
