Marcia Anderson Olson, 75, died Dec. 22, 2013, in Chapel Hill, NC, after a short battle with brain cancer.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Carl, and two daughters, Kristin and Susan Olson. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Griffin and Kira Olson-Allen and Dasha and Dante Bartolanzo, as well as her sister, Jane Benjamin.
Marcia was born to the late Ivan and Ruth Anderson in East Lansing, MI. She received her B.A. in Education from Michigan State University in 1959 and enjoyed teaching elementary school in Michigan and Fredonia, NY.
After raising her daughters, she attended Jamestown Community College, where she received an A.A.S. in Nursing in 1984. She then worked as an R.N. for many years in N.Y. and N.C., specializing in treating the chronically mentally ill.
Marcia was unusually optimistic and kind, always thinking of the needs of others. In addition to her professional work, she volunteered with a literacy organization in Cary, N.C., at a school for teen mothers, and at Gulf Gate Library in Sarasota. She was also active in Southwinds, the retirement community she and her husband Carl lived in and loved for many years. She was the park historian and also led gardening projects and water exercise classes. She enjoyed international travel with her husband Carl.
At her request, no service will be held. Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to water.org or the Red Cross.
