MAYVILLE - The Med-allion Treasure Hunt will run in conjunction with the 2014 President's Day Weekend Winter Festival.
The medallion, created by artist David Stutzman for the 2006 Winter Festival, will be hidden on accessible public property somewhere in Chau-tauqua County. Sponsors of the Treasure Hunt this year are Northwest Savings Bank, Maple Inn, Chautauqua Suites Meeting & Expo Cen-ter and Webb's Captain's Table Restaurant.
Placed in a container or bag for its protection, the medallion will not be hidden below ground level and no higher than six feet above ground level. It will not be hidden on any body of water or in the water. Treasure hunters seek the medallion at their own risk. New rules allow Treasure Hunt winners from the 2012 Winter Fes-tival and all years previous to be eligible to participate again. Festival Committee members and last year's 2013 Treasure Hunt winner are not eligible to participate.
Clues will begin to appear in the media beginning Feb. 3 and continue each weekday until Feb. 14 in the daily newspapers Jamestown Post Journal and OBSERVER, with a weekly review of clues in weekly papers Westfield Republican and Mayville Sentinel News.
This year all treasure hunters must be registered to be eligible to win the $250 cash prize. All registrants will also be entered in prize drawings held on four consecutive Fridays, the first on Jan. 24 and the last on Feb. 14.
The prizes are being donated by the above-mentioned contest sponsors. Reg-istering early allows you to be a part of all four drawings; however, those registering later will still be entered in the remaining prize drawings. Treasure Hunt Regis-tration forms are now available at the following Mayville businesses: Mayville Hard-ware, Webb's Year-Round Resort Candy/Gift Shop, The Cottage Collection at Webb's Year-Round Resort, Light-house Point Grocery, Chautauqua Suites Meeting & Expo Center (register at desk), Lakeview Hotel, Crosby's (Mayville) as well as Chautauqua County branches of M&T Bank and Northwest Savings Bank. There will be a $5 registration fee per entry and the deadline for registration is by Feb. 2. No registrations will be taken once the clues begin appearing in the newspapers and on the radio Feb. 3.
Complete Treasure Hunt rules are outlined in the registration form. The person or persons locating the medallion will be announced at the Festival's evening opening ceremonies on Feb. 14.
