CATTARAUGUS - Gowanda's Jon Flynn and Cody Richter, along with Fredonia's Dakota Gardner and Cattaraugus-Little Valley-Pine Valley's Gabe Grey and Alex Kelly all won titles Saturday at the Cattaraugus-Little Valley Wrestling Tournament.
Flynn won his title at 120 pounds, Richter at 152, Gardner at 138, Grey at 132 and Kelly at 170.
Gardner finished 5-0 on the day, including two first-period pins and three wins by technical fall.
Also for Fredonia, Roger DeJesus did enough to leave another good impression on his coaches, as he finished fourth at 138 after going 3-2 on the day.
"He came within three seconds of getting to the finals and facing Dakota (Gardner)," Fredonia assistant coach Ross Conti said. "He was winning in a critical match and ended up getting reversed, which ended up tying it up and sending it into overtime.
"He still had a fine tournament," Conti continued. "And he's really coming along. He's such a physically talented kid for being just a second-year wrestler."
Other highlights for the Hillbillies, according to Conti, were the performances of Jovany Ruiz at 120, Steve Mignoli at 170, Ty Miller at 182, Ryan Fisk at 195 and Jordan Stebbins at 170.
"He had a fantastic final match," Conti said of Mignoli. "He won 3-2 and he had a phenomenal escape in the final seconds. It was a great way to end the tournament. It was one of the greatest escapes at the end of a match that I've seen in a long time."
Ruiz finished third, Mignoli finished second, Miller fourth and Fisk third. Stebbins did not place during the tournament, but he picked up the first two wins of his varsity career. After dropping his first three matches of the day, Stebbins pinned his final two opponents.
Warren, Pa. won the tournament and were followed by Randolph and Gowanda. Host Cattaraugus-Little Valley-Pine Valley was fifth and Fredonia was seventh.
The Hillbillies are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Olean, before returning home Wednesday to face Gowanda.
