Gertrude S. "Gert," Majka (Kozlowski), age 88, of Fredonia, N.Y died February 26, 2014 at her home. She was born June 5, 1925 in Arkwright, NY to the late Joseph and Sophia Noczek Kozlowski.
Gert grew up in Dunkirk and attended St. Mary's School. She married Edmund A. Majka, and together they raised three children. Edmund died November 4, 1993.
She owned and operated Gert's Restaurant in Dunkirk, where the specialty was the homemade pies she would bake. Gert was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Fredonia for over 60 years. She also worked in food service at SUNY Fredonia.
She enjoyed playing cards, and especially enjoyed pinochle. As a warm, outgoing and friendly person, she was active in numerous social clubs in the area and she loved to travel. Gert is survived by her 3 children: Cynthia Curran (Patrick) of Williamsville, NY, Edmund Jr. "Rick" Majka (JoAnn) of Jensen Beach, FL., and Jeffrey Majka (Jennifer) of Fredonia; seven grandchildren: Kevin Farnham (Jamaica), Brittany and Alyssa Curran, Joseph and Alex Majka (Danielle), Brandon and Jacob Majka; Five sisters: Josephine Bielaszka, Vicky Stelmack, Theresa Kawski, Dorothy Ziemba, and Genevieve DiBiase; and one brother: Joseph Kozlowski. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, Gert was preceded in death by 2 sisters and one brother: Lottie Gervase, Florence Jagoda, and Chester Kozlowski.
Friends and family may call Sunday 4-7 p.m. at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, where prayers will be offered Monday morning at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Gert loved her children, grandchildren, her extended family and many friends. She was the "Family Historian" and will be deeply missed. Arrangements by David J. Dengler.
