GENESEO - A free-position goal by Katey Hart lifted No. 9 Geneseo to an 9-8 SUNYAC women's lacrosse win Wednesday over the Fredonia State Blue Devils.
Hart's goal, her third of the game, came with 2:47 left and took momentum away from the Blue Devils, who had just rallied from a three-goal deficit.
The Blue Devils had one final chance to tie the game. Following a Geneseo draw control, Katie Kleine caused a turnover which led to a free-position shot by Marissa Cussins. Geneseo goalkeeper Laura Passamonte made a difficult save with :02 remaining and time ran out.
"This is what the SUNYAC is," Fredonia State coach Chris Case said "It's good team after good team. This is what you face every time you're out there in a SUNYAC battle. They are a solid team. We were one play short. That's the difference between us winning and losing."
Geneseo improved to 8-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
The Blue Devils jumped to a 3-1 lead on goals by Katie Glagolev, Kristie Kleine and Katie Kleine. Geneseo scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.
Geneseo extended its scoring run to five straight until Emily Polizzi broke the string and cut the Blue Devil deficit to 6-4 with 19:53 remaining. Cussins scored her team-leading 30th goal of the season at 16:42 to cut the margin to one goal.
Hart stemmed the tide with her second goal of the game. Geneseo later regained its three-goal lead before Katie Kleine asserted herself. She collected three straight draw controls in a span of two minutes. Each one resulted in a goal by the Blue Devils - by Polizzi, by Juliana Kotas and by Glagolev with 6:23 left for an 8-8 tie.
Kristie Kleine finished with one goal and four assists, her older sister Katie with one goal and two assists and Glagolev and Polizzi with two goals each. Blue Devil goaltender Jessica Zagari have five saves. Chelsea Maderer had a team-high two ground balls. Polizzi was credited with two draw controls. Katie Kleine led the Blue Devils with two caused turnovers.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 8-3 and ended their eight-game winning streak. They are 2-1 in the SUNYAC heading into a home conference game Saturday at 1 p.m. against Oneonta.
"I give our team a lot of credit to rally back and make it a game," Case said. "We have to have that game (Saturday) if we want to lock up a playoff spot."
STICK CHECKS: Katie Kleine on Tuesday was named ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Division III Player of the Week. She was also named SUNYAC Player of the Week on Monday. She had eight goals, 11 assists and numerous field stats in Blue Devil home wins last week over Elmira and New Paltz ... Oneonta brings a No. 19 ranking into Fredonia for Saturday's game.
Devils come up short at Behrend
ERIE, Pa. - The Fredonia State baseball team took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning, but could not hold on, dropping a 5-4 decision at Penn State Behrend on Wednesday.
Down 3-2, pinch hitter Ciro Frontale singled. He advanced to third on a wild pitch. Matt Casilio walked to put runners at the corner. Conner Lorenzo singled home Frontale and advanced Casilio to third. A sacrifice fly by Kenny Johnston gave the Devils the lead.
It would be short lived, however, as Behrend scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead.
Five different Fredonia State pitchers combined in a nine-inning effort. Matt Tobias threw the first inning, giving up two runs. Joe Korszun followed up with three scoreless and hitless innings. Jason Weyman pitched a scoreless fifth. Ben Senior gave up one run in the sixth and Carl Wolf gave up two runs over two innings while taking the loss.
Both teams had seven hits in the game. Johnston tripled for the Devils and Mike Prentice and Kyle Koslowski each had a double.
The Devils travel to New Paltz for a three-game set on Friday and Saturday.
