Chicken wing enthusiasts should mark July 5 on their calendars - the date of the annual Wreck and Roll Festival in the city of Dunkirk. The festival, as in years past, will bring back a chicken wing contest.
The Festival Committee discussed Wreck and Roll, in addition to the Picnic in the Point, at its meeting on Thursday at the Stearns Building. For the chicken wing cooking contest, the festival will supply a fryer and is looking into possibly supplying chicken wings for participants.
"We were told by a lot of the vendors, if we had the fryers it would be much easier. A couple of the years we did have the fryers, we had more participation. We talked to (Mike) Porpiglia and he's going to help us out with the fryers. ... As far as wings, we are in the midst of talking with Maplevale and they are interested in being onsite down there so this way the vendors can get the wings they need on demand," Assistant Director of Development Lacy Lawrence said.

As part of the Wreck and Roll Festival in early July, a chicken wing cooking contest will be held. The event was discussed at a city of Dunkirk Festival Committee meeting Thursday. Pictured, from left, are committee members Samantha Hall, Zen Olow, Youth and Recreation Chairman Tim Gornikiewicz and Assistant Director of Development Lacy Lawrence.
There was also talk of holding a chicken wing eating contest, but no plans were finalized. Another new feature of Wreck and Roll will be a wrestling event. The event will be in Memorial Park and the committee is planning to bring a celebrity wrestler for the occasion.
"What we thought what we would do is the first half of Memorial Park is where we would have some of the vendors. We thought after the circle, the second half, we would have it over there. It's really big. We would be able to have a large crowd over there," Lawrence said.
Pre-sale tickets will available and the committee is thinking about only have three rows around the rink, with standing room behind. Each row would be able to seat 75 people around the wrestling ring. The regatta, an annual event at Wreck and Roll, will once again be held at the boat launch. At the last committee meeting, three themes were discussed: "Around the World," "Explorers of the Sea" and "Superheroes." The committee was in favor of a superhero theme but no official decision was made.
"I think people would go all out on that (theme)," Youth and Recreation Chairman Tim Gornikiewicz said.
The committee also discussed details about Picnic in the Point, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 25 at Point Gratiot. DJ Bear will provide entertainment. Food, carnival games, face painting and a bounce house will be ongoing activities throughout the afternoon. As part of attending the picnic, a coupon for a free tour at the Dunkirk Lighthouse will be included.
"We're going to pass (coupons) out to anyone who is there. You have to come to the Picnic in the Point to get a coupon," Lawrence said.
The next meeting of the festival committee will be on May 8.
