St. Joseph Church, Gowanda
Today (Holy Saturday) at 3 p.m. blessing of the Easter food is scheduled at 8:30 p.m., The Solemn vigil of Easter Blessing of the fire and the lighting of the Easter Candle, the Easter Proclamation, the Liturgy of the Word, the Blessing of Water, Baptismal Renewal, and Liturgy of the Eucharist will take place. Confessions will not be heard, and there will be no 4:30 p.m. Mass that day.
Members Brian and Leanna McMahon will speak to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Northern Chautauqua Sunday at 11 a.m at the Grange Hall at 58 W. Main St., Fredonia. The McMahons will explore similarities between Christian progressive thought and Eastern Spirituality, using the works of Matthew Fox and Richard Rohr, both of whom present a vision of the human spirit that is positive and deeply hopeful. All are welcome to attend this service.
Religious exploration classes and nursery care will not be available at this service but will resume next Sunday.
Divine Mercy Novena
In the Vatican, on April 27, Blessed John Paul II and Pope John XXIII will be canonized as saints in the Roman Catholic Church. This will occur on the Feast of Divine Mercy (the second Sunday of Easter), a feast that Pope John Paul II instituted in April of 2000.
The schedule for the remaining days of the novena that began on Good Friday is as follows: Holy Saturday, April 19, 3 p.m., St. Hedwig's location; Easter Sunday, April 20, 12 noon, St. Hedwig's location; Monday, April 21, 7 p.m., St. Hedwig's location; Tuesday, April 22, 7 p.m., St. Hedwig's location; Wednesday, April 23, 7 p.m., St. Hedwig's location; Thursday, April 24, 7 p.m., St. Hedwig's location; Friday, April 25, 7 p.m., St. Hedwig's location; Saturday, April 26, 3:15 p.m., St. Hyacinth's location; and Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, 2 p.m., Mass, St. Hyacinth's location.
After the special Divine Mercy Sunday Mass and chaplet on April 27, a reception will follow in the Lyceum. All are invited to attend.
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Anthony's Church on Cushing Street, Fredonia. Members will be electing a new slate of officers at this meeting. New members are always welcome. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.
There has been a change in the day of the month for the Sinclairville Food Express truck's visits. This service will now be provided the fourth Wednesday of the month. It will no longer be occurring on the second Monday. Also, the time has changed. The truck will arrive about 9:30 a.m. Clients need to be signed in by 9:30 a.m. The next visit will be April 23.

Polish Fest at St. John UCC
A Polish Fest is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 at St. John's United Church of Christ, 733 Central Ave., Dunkirk. Food will be served 4-6:30 p.m. or until sold out. Tickets are $10. The menu includes Polish sausage, homemade pierogi and golabki, beet relish, bread and desserts. Take-out is available. Zion Lutheran Church, located at 11 Porter Ave., Silver Creek,. is having its annual Chiavetta's chicken barbecue on Sunday, May 4 from noon until sold out. Tickets are $ 9.00 presale and $10.00 at the door. Presale tickets are available from any Zion Member or by calling 913-5211. The meal includes chicken, tossed salad, potato salad, roll and butter and dessert. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Laurel Run this year.
The First United Presbyterian Church of Dunkirk Ladies' Guild will be holding its spring rummage sale on Friday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. until noon at Westminster Hall, 410 Eagle Street, Dunkirk. Parking is available in the parking lot next to the church. Money raised from the rummage sale will be used to support local, national and world missions.
Cherry Creek/Leon rummage sale
The Cherry Creek/Leon United Methodist Church has scheduled a rummage sale at the church on Main Street in Cherry Creek. The event runs Friday, May 2 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday will also include a bake and bag sale. Dewittville-Hartfield United Methodist Church
The Dewittville-Hartfield United Methodist Church is hosting a roasted chicken dinner on Saturday, May 3, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The church is located at Rt. 430 & Meadows Road in Dewittville. Dinner includes 1/2 roasted chicken, potato salad, baked beans, dessert and beverage for an $8 donation.
Westfield United Methodist Church
The Westfield United Methodist Church will be holding its spring rummage, clothing and bake sale on Friday and Saturday May 2 and May 3 at 101 East Main Street, Westfield. The event kicks off Friday, running from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a bag sale starting at noon.
South Dayton United Methodist Church
The South Dayton United Methodist Church is having a giant rummage sale on May 2 and 3. The church is located at 328 Pine Street in South Dayton. The sale will run Friday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A bag sale is planned for Saturday at noon. There is a bake sale both days.
