Revitalize Dunkirk to hold Thursday meeting
Revitalize Dunkirk will welcome city residents and other interested parties on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator, main conference room, 214 Central Ave. in Dunkirk. The agenda will comprise updates of projects pending or underway including "Complete Streets" legislation for the city of Dunkirk, multi-use pathway extension, the "Main Street" grant, the Spoke Folk bicycle kiosk and community gardens.
Committee assignments will be discussed as well as the mission statement distributed at the previous meeting.
Residents are cordially invited to attend to learn of works-in-progress and to share their ideas.

A benefit will be held for Iona Burkholder at the Stanley Hose Company Fire Department in Sherman on Saturday. Doors open at 1 p.m. and an Italian Pasta Bar will be served from 2-7 p.m. The Red Cross will be there to hold a Blood Drive in Iona's honor. Each donor will receive a free tee shirt and gift card to Tops.
Iona was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in January of this year after being rushed to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She will need to continue with chemotherapy treatment for the next 2 1/2 years. All proceeds will go to her family to help with medical and transportation costs.
Local bands donating their time to play at the benefit include: The Bogarts, Uncle Claud's Band, and the Kingsfield Family Band. There will also be a special performance for the children by local artist Lindsey Hinger. There will be raffles, silent auctions of artwork and other items. Children's activities are also scheduled. A special "Iona's Army" T-shirts will be available to purchase at the benefit.

Gowanda Fire to host chicken barbecue dinner
A chicken barbecue dinner will be held on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until sold out at the Gowanda Fire Hall, 230 Aldrich St. The dinner will include chicken, baked beans, potato salad, rolls, dessert and a beverage. Dinners are $8.50; for chicken only is $5.50. Take outs are available. The dinner is sponsored by the Rescue Co. 3 and Ladies Auxiliary Co. 6 of the fire department.
Forestville kindergarten and pre-school
Forestville Central School has set its kindergarten roundup date for Thursday at 1 p.m.
Children who will be 5 years old by Dec. 1, 2014 are eligible for kindergarten. Children who will be 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2014 are eligible for pre-school. At this time, any parent who has not yet contacted the district, and has a child who falls into either of these categories, should call the elementary office at 965-2742. Registration packets will be sent out soon. The date for Pre-School Parent Orientation will be determined soon.
Support group for Alzheimer's Caregivers in Jamestown
The Alzheimer's Associa-tion Western New York chapter sponsors a Caregiver Support Group in Jamestown, which meets monthly. The group is designed to provide emotional and social support for caregivers and help participants develop methods and skills to solve problems. The groups encourage caregivers to maintain their own personal, physical, and emotional health, as well as optimally care for the person with dementia.
The Jamestown meeting takes place in the Fluvanna Community Church, 3363 Fluvanna Ave., at 5:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month.

'A FanTableous Fete' reception and auction Saturday in Fredonia
The Fredonia Opera House "A FanTableous Fete" reception and auction will be held at The White Inn, 52 E. Main St.. Fredonia. Fourteen uniquely designed maple corner tables will be auctioned off. Bids on the tables will be accepted in advance of the Sunday reception/auction as well as at the event.
To place an advance bid, bidders should email their name, phone number, name of the table they are bidding on and the bid amount to firstname.lastname@example.org. The bids are updated daily.
If bidders cannot attend the FanTableous Fete auction, the Opera House will make arrangements for them to attend and bid via telephone or for a proxy bidder.

Gowanda Volunteer Fire Department open house Saturday
The Gowanda Volunteer Fire Department will hold an open house at its fire halls on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Main Hall at 230 Aldrich St. and the Hidi Hall on Beech Street will be open for the public to visit.
This is in conjunction with the 2014 statewide open house program organized by FASNY, the Firemen's Association of the State of New York. This is their "Recruit New York 2014" program to recruit new members for the volunteer fire departments.
The Gowanda Fire Department invites everyone to go in to see the equipment used to perform their purpose to "protect the life and property in the community."

The Cassadaga Band will hold a "Meet the Band" night at 7 p.m., on April 30 at the Fredonia Presbyterian Church, 219 Central Ave., Fredonia.

Lecture today canceled
The Earth Week lecture at SUNY Fredonia sponsored by the Philosophical Society slated for today, "Objects of Hope in the Age of Climate Change" at 5 p.m. in Williams Center Room S204 by Dr. Kenneth Shockley, an environmental ethics philosopher and Academic Director of the State University at Buffalo's Sustainability Academy, has been cancelled due to illness.
Gas price up 3.2 cents
Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 3.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.79/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.62/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

The National Weather Service of Buffalo will hold a SkyWarn training for amateur radio operators and the general public today at 7 p.m. This will be held at the Cattaraugus County building in Little Valley in the EMO meeting room.
The NWS holds refresher training every 3 years throughout the served area of the Buffalo office. SkyWarn/weather spotters training will last about 2 hours.
