Janet Arnold, president of the Bud 'n Bloom Garden Club, recently presented a check for $3,500 to Martha Wiser, board member and volunteer book store manager of Literacy Volunteers of Chautauqua County.
The check represented the proceeds from the garden club's sixth annual plant sale for LVCC held at Deakins' barn in Portland on May 17 and 18. The money will be used to sustain the free programs offered by LVCC for area residents. Tutors and those assisting in the book store are all volunteers.
The success of the sale was attributed to a number of factors. The great weather brought out both previous and new customers. Some customers shopped on Saturday and returned on Sunday. Turnbulls, Westfield Nursery, M & R, Glen Acres and Mike's Nursery supported the sale through donations of beautiful flowering bushes which were raffled off and won by five lucky ticket holders. Bud 'n Bloom thanks these local nurseries for their generosity.

Members of Bud 'n Bloom and some LVCC members worked hard to make the sale a success. Although the sale lasted only a total of eight hours, preparation for it began in February. Garden club members consider the sale this a labor of love and has continued to run it because they consider LVCC an important volunteer organization that needs the continued support of the community.
