GOWANDA Melvin L. Gates Sr., 82, of Route 438, Gowanda, passed away Wednesday (July 23, 2014) at the Gowanda Nursing Home.
He was born April 1, 1932 in Buffalo, NY the son of the late Leroy and Matilda (Twoguns) Gates.
He was married to the former Nannette "Sue" Plummer, who predeceased him on June 11, 2004.
Mr. Gates was a machinist at Parker and Skeels, Carlton Controls and Willard Machine in Buffalo, NY.
He was a member of the Seneca Nation of Indians, an avid outdoorsman and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by three sons, Bernard Gates of Gowanda, NY, Melvin Gates Jr. of Irving, NY and Randall (Susie) Gates of Cattaraugus, NY; four daughters Darlene Gates, Linda Mohawk, Susan (Rich) Schindler and Janine (Steven) Gates all of Gowanda, NY; 25 grandchildren; and 17 great- grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Richard (Geri) Gates of Gowanda, NY and Lynn Jackson of Buffalo, NY. Also two sisters, Cynthia Jackson of Buffalo, NY and Valerie Pierce of Gowanda, NY and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Betty Parker; and two brothers, Leroy Gates Jr. and Frederick Jackson.
Friends may call at the Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 105 East Main Street today from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Saturday July 26, 2014 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Seneca Nation Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation Volunteer Fire Department.
