Canadian folk singer to perform Friday
The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center presents Canadian folk artist Garnet Rogers live on stage on Fri., Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. The concert is part of the Folk in Fredonia Gilman Family Music Series.
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Series this year, the Opera House has been bringing back some of the artists who performed in the Series earlier years. Garnet Rogers first appeared in 1996, and closes out the celebration of the Series’ three decades.
A folk musician, singer, songwriter and composer, Rogers was born in Hamilton, Ont. He began his professional career barely out of high school, on the road as a full-time working musician with his older brother, folk musician Stan Rogers, and arranging Stan’s music. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music.
With Stan’s death in June 1983 (just a few weeks before Stan, Garnet and bass player Jim Morison were to tour the US), Rogers embarked on his own solo career and has established himself as “one of the major talents of our time.”
Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer,” he is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth, dark baritone” (Washington Post), his incredible range, and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Rogers is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. His songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record).
An optimist at heart, Rogers sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday.
Tickets to the show are $20 (Adults), $18 (Opera House Members), and $10 (Students) and can be purchased in person at the Opera House Box Office or by phone at 716-679-1891, Tuesday-Friday, 12-4:30 p.m. They can be purchased online anytime at www.fredopera.org. The show is part of the Folk in Fredonia Gilman Family Music Series, which for 30 years has been sponsored by The Gilman Family.
In addition, Opera House programming is made possible, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
