War of 1812 veteran remembered at ceremony
Last month, the National Society United States Daughters of 1812, Celea Sampson Cole Chapter 507 held a ceremony to acknowledge a new headstone and to present a grave marker for Private Richard Strickland.
Strickland was a pioneer of Pine Grove Township. He died on May 15, 1849, and was buried in Foster Cemetery, Lander Pa. Richard served in the Militia, NY State 77th Regiment during the War of 1812. After the war, he and his family resided in Arkwright and then moved to Lander, Pa., around 1840.
The veteran’s headstone was donated by the U.S. Veterans Department to honor Strickland’s service.
Those in attendance were members of Celea Sampson Cole Chapter, along with friends and family. A short ceremony was presented by Gail Dash, secretary and Elaine Rissel, Chaplain. Lilly Johnson, fifth great-granddaughter, sang the National Anthem. Sandra Johnson, President and third great-granddaughter spoke about his life and military service. Honors were presented by the Youngsville American Legion Post 658.
