Girls on the Run inspires confidence, community at CLCS
This fall, nine girls from Chautauqua Lake Elementary School participated in the Girls on the Run program, a nationwide initiative focused on building confidence, health, and joy through running and team activities. Thanks to full funding, this empowering program welcomed girls in grades three to six, coached by teachers Megan Grace and Kathy Machemer.
Throughout the season, the GOTR team set personal goals, engaged in group activities, and prepared for their ultimate challenge — the Girls on the Run 5K event, which took place on November 9th in Buffalo. This exciting 5K marked the season’s end and celebrated each girl’s progress, resilience, and accomplishments. “Seeing the smiles on students’ faces as they proudly crossed the finish line at Delaware Park was truly a testament to the impact of the program and our coaches’ investment, “ states Elementary Principal, Megan Lundgren.
Beyond physical activities, the program emphasizes community involvement. In November, the GOTR team practiced their right to vote by selecting a community service project. The winning idea was to write positive post-it notes for every elementary teacher, paired with a Smartie treat. The girls eagerly crafted messages like “You are great!” and “Remember to smile today” and delivered them to teachers’ desks. This small act of kindness brought joy to the teachers the next morning and left the girls feeling proud of making a positive impact!
The GOTR program has provided an uplifting opportunity for Chautauqua Lake Elementary students, as well as many others in our region.
