Helicopter lands safely after bird strike
No one was seriously injured when a STAT MedEvac helicopter encountered a flock of geese, forcing an emergency landing in Pennsylvania.
The bird strike occurred around 2:30 a.m. Friday while the helicopter was transporting a patient between UPMC Chautauqua in Jamestown and UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa.
A UPMC spokeswoman said the damage — to the aircraft’s windshield — did not impact flight control. “The crew followed safety protocols and landed safely,” the spokeswoman said.
The helicopter landed near North East Township in Pennsylvania. Members of the Greenfield Township Volunteer Fire Department secured a landing zone for STAT MedEvac, which is operated by UPMC.
A second helicopter was brought in and finished the transportation of the patient. According to the fire department in a message posted to Facebook, the crew of the STAT MedEvac was treated for minor injuries.
A picture posted by Greenfield showed the helicopter with a large hole in its windshield. The UPMC spokeswoman said the damaged aircraft was taken to a hangar in West Mifflin, Pa., for repairs and eventually will be placed back into service.
“We have full coverage in the area,” UPMC said. “An additional helicopter is always in the rotation and dispatched when one is out for maintenance or these types of situations.”
