Dunkirk High School student pictured with air gun disciplined

Dunkirk High School

A Dunkirk High School student was disciplined after appearing in an image with an air gun, the city school district reported Tuesday morning.

“Dunkirk High School administrators were notified of an image that is circulating of a student with an air gun. The school took immediate action after learning of the photograph,” according to a release from the district’s communications director, Jennifer Westerholt.

She confirmed the photo was circulated on social media, and the student in question has been removed from campus.

“The student was instantly disciplined, and the school is working with the Dunkirk Police Department to investigate,” Westerholt wrote in the release.

The Dunkirk City School District’s Student Code of Conduct defines firearms and weapons as “any device, including a starter gun or imitation pistol which will or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile…”

“Safety and security is of utmost importance to us, and we take a situation like this extremely seriously,” said high school principal Rebecca Farwell. “We consider an air gun a weapon, and the student will face consequences accordingly.”

The Code of Conduct states the penalty range for such an offense as “detention, loss of privileges, in-school suspension, permanent suspension, or legal action.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
