‘Significant’ flooding expected near lake; state of emergency issued
A lakeshore flood warning is in effect for waterfront communities while the village of Fredonia and town of Pomfret have issued a state of emergency starting at noon Saturday.
The National Weather Service this morning said, in issuing a statement, that “significant lakeshore flooding (is) expected. Rapid rises are expected this morning with the highest levels this afternoon and early evening.
The warning is in effect through 4 a.m. Sunday.
The warning notes, “The rapid rise in water levels will result in lakeshore flooding along the Lake Erie shore. This includes Dunkirk Harbor and Pier, Sunset Bay, Route 5 in Hamburg, Buffalo Harbor, and Canalside. Flooding is also possible along the upper Niagara River shore.”
In addition, the National Weather Service in Buffalo notes there is the potential for lake effect snow to develop today and last into Monday, accumulating 1-2 feet northeast of the lakes. Snow bands will oscillate, impacting different locations at different times. Near zero visibility in snow and blowing snow will make travel extremely difficult in snow bands.
An on-street parking ban is in effect for all village of Fredonia streets starting at noon. This is to ensure roads will be clear for the DPW, Utility Workers and Emergency Vehicles to operate.
A travel advisory was also placed into effect at 10 a.m. Saturday due to concerns about the weather.
