Man charged after accident with truck in city

A 26-year-old man is being charged after a high-speed chase that led to an accident at East Second and Main streets on Thursday night.

Christopher Cancel-Vazquez was charged with felony unlawful fleeing a police officer causing injury, second-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, no seat belt, reckless driving, failure to obey a police office, speed not reasonable and failure to stop at a red light as well as other traffic violations.

Around 9 p.m., officers with the Dunkirk Police Department attempted to stop the vehicle in area of Park Avenue and East Second Street. Cancel-Vazquez fled the stop in his vehicle at a high rate of speed. He traveled through the red light at Main Street, striking a tractor-trailer traveling north on Main Street.

The impact caused heavy damage to both vehicles causing the truck to leak a large amount of diesel fuel onto the road. Dunkirk Fire arrived on scene and transported both Cancel-Vazquez and the operator of the truck to Brooks-TLC Hospital for treatment.

Chautauqua County Hazmat assisted Dunkirk Fire on scene with fuel cleanup. Cancel-Vazquez was additionally found to have outstanding warrants through Cheektowaga and the Town of Evans Police Departments. The investigation into the accident is ongoing with further charges pending.
