Cassadaga gets new kayak launch
CASSADAGA — For several years, the Cassadaga Lakes Association (CLA) has been lobbying the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to add a kayak launch to the DEC boat launch on Dale Drive. The Cassadaga launch is the second busiest in the County, and over 70% of its users are launching kayaks or canoes.
The rapidly growing use of this boat launch created safety and congestion problems. To avoid competing with powerboats, some kayak users launched off the shoreline, causing erosion of the lakefront. A dedicated kayak launch could solve these problems and create a more enjoyable experience for users.
Although strongly supportive of adding a kayak launch, it became clear in 2022 that the DEC would not have funding for this project. The CLA decided to take the lead and seek funding through various grant opportunities. Thanks to the generosity of the Chautauqua County Occupancy Tax program, the Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth, the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation and the CLA, funding was secured.
The new kayak launch was installed on June 2 by Anchor Marine of Grand Island. The kayak launch will be maintained by the DEC in conjunction with its work on the powerboat launch. The kayak launch is now providing a safe and easy entry for paddlers to enjoy the beautiful Cassadaga lakes.
