The Dairy Future is Bright! Eighteen 4-H youth, ages 5-8, participated as Dairy Buds to gain experience showing a dairy calf. Each youth received a trophy, colorful ribbon, and a bucket with prizes for their smiles and efforts walking their dairy calves in the show ring. They were assisted by their Big Buddies, older Chautauqua County 4-H members who have helped them throughout the project year.
The 4-H Dairy Show at the 2023 Chautauqua County Fair featured 57 youth total, with 39 Chautauqua County 4-H youth (ages 9-19) who were judged and received ribbons, trophies, and other special awards for their efforts showing six different breeds of dairy cattle. The official judge was Mr. Shaun Merrill from Seneca Falls, NY.
These 4-H youth, ages 9 to 19, showed their dairy animals in 4-H dairy showmanship and in the judging contest. The showmanship contest involved competing for awards based upon how well the 4-H members presented their dairy animals to the judge. In the judging contest, youth received ribbons, trophies, and other special awards based upon the judge’s opinion of the animal’s conformation characteristics.
The future of the 4-H dairy project is bright as an additional 18 youth ages 5-8 participated in the showmanship class for Dairy Buds. They were not judged for placings, but to gain experience being in the show arena and interacting with the dairy judge.
