Sheridan Town Board members sworn in
SHERIDAN — The new Sheridan Town Board has now been officially confirmed. The Board recently made things official when Supervisor Tom Wik, Town Board members Colleen Yerico and Joe White, and Town Justice Jonathan Szumigala were officially sworn in.
After the passing of former Town Supervisor John H. Walker II, the Sheridan Town Board was in flux for the remainder of the year. First, Richard Feinen stepped up to lead the meetings following Walker’s death. Then, Wik, a Town Board member since 2017, expressed interest in serving as the next Town Supervisor. Wik was appointed to the role by the rest of the Town Board in August, with Election Day less than two months later.
“I was honored to be appointed as Supervisor,” Wik said.
Wik, an engineer, previously lived in Amherst before moving to Sheridan seven years ago. He has over 30 years of experience in local government.
“Basically, I’m interested in good government and running the town as efficiently as possible, keeping taxes low,” Wik said after his appointment.
In taking over as Town Supervisor, Wik’s seat as Town Councilman was opened. The Town Board appointed Joe White, a U.S. Army veteran who served multiple roles and acted as a member on various committees while in the military over 28 years of service. White expressed an interest in the seat on the Town Board because of limited interest throughout the community.
“There didn’t seem to be many people that were going to step forward, so I figured I’m retired from the Army … I live in the town, I’m going to do my part to help out,” White said.
White ran in the November election for one of two seats on the Town Board, along with two other candidates, incumbent Colleen Yerico and Sue Bigler, a Democrat. Yerico was re-elected to her seat with 471 votes, the most of the three candidates. White was elected with 388 votes. Bigler received 254 votes.
Wik ran unopposed for Town Supervisor and received 535 votes. Town Justice Jonathan Szumigala also ran unopposed for the Town Justice seat, with 532 votes in his favor.
After his initial appointment as Supervisor, Wik said of the new Town Board, “I think we’ll work great together.”
The Sheridan Town Board meets on the second Wednesday of each month, at 7 p.m., at the Sheridan Town Hall.
